Nanberry: Black Brother White by Jackie French
"Two brothers - one black, one white - and a colony at the end of the world."
This book is a great resource in order to allow the students to further understand the concept of empathy. Nanberry, the main character of the book, is on the beach when the First Fleet arrives and more than a year later, he was an orphan child who was brought into a white man's family. He is brought up with the white ways of thinking but he also remembers who he is and his own cultural background. He starts to feel as an outsider since he does not feel accepted by the white but nor his own people. Reading this book would give great inside to a boy who lives in effectively two worlds.

New South Wales State Library - Website
http://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/discover_collections/history_nation/terra_australis/artists/bradley/index.html
This website is an incredibly helpful resource for any class or year studying the early days of Australian settlement. It allows students to interactively explore different aspects, stages, and perspectives of the First Fleets' arrival in Australia, and the ongoing influence of settlement. Each aspect is broken down into easily accessible pages and links, and gives a thorough explanation of each topic, as well as a helpful video (on most pages) which summarises the key points. The website gives the histories of settlement from a variety of different perspectives, including the effects on the Aboriginal population and stories of convicts of the First Fleet.
Oliver Twist - Film
The film Oliver Twist is a helpful resource for learning about what life was like in 18th Century Britain, before the First Fleet departed for Australia. It portrays what life was like for the lower classes in Britain, and gives insight into why a person or family might want the opportunity to start a new life in Australia. By learning about the political and social turmoil in Britain, students are able to appreciate the points of view of convicts aboard the First Fleet, and determine for themselves whether or not it might have been a worthwhile journey in order to start a new life.
